What happens in a trapeze class?
Before Your Class
If you're a first-time flyer, your class starts with a lesson in flying trapeze basics from a Flight Crew Instructor. In Ground School, you will be fitted with a padded safety belt, then learn the basic knowledge and skills you need to quickly begin practicing your first trick on the trapeze and in the air, including:
- how to execute your first trick—the knee hang
- trapeze terms, and the cues the Flight Crew coaches will call out as you swing to let you know when to take off and execute tricks
- proper catch technique
- how to land in and exit the net
After a little practice of the knee hang elements, it's time to chalk up your hands and go. With safety lines connected to your belt, you'll climb the ladder to the platform, where a Launchpad Crew member will prepare you for take-off. When you're in position and have a good grip on the trapeze bar, the senior coach on the ground will call out the cue to get ready and the to take off from the platform and launch into your first exhilarating swing. You'll feel a rush of air and adrenaline as you glide out over the net. The coach will guide you with additional cues to for getting into and out of the knee hang position, dropping into the net, and returning to the ground. As you wait for you next practice swing, the Flight Crew will answer your questions and provide additional coaching, pointers and encouragement. You will have the opportunity to do several practice swings before working with the Catcher.
The First Catch
First-time flyers who have accomplished the knee hang get to try the trick with an experienced, encouraging catcher. This time, the catcher will call out the Ready/Hep commands to ensure you start your swing with the poper timing to put you in the right position for the catch. The Ground Control coach will still call out the in-flight cues to get you into position for the catch. Hanging by your knees with your arms outstretched and catch hands set, you'll swing into position for the Catcher to clasp your wrists. When the catcher gives the signal, you'll straighten your legs and swing through the completion of your first exhilarating catch.
After mastering the knee-hang, return flyers can use the practice swing portion of the class to learn new, more challenging maneuvers or concentrate on perfecting the core techniques that will help them fly higher and do more. During the catch session, return flyers may attempt any tricks they've successfully executed during practice.
How long is a trapeze class?
Each Flying Trapeze class lasts 90-minutes.
How many participants can be in a class?
Classes can have up to 10 participants. Most include both first-timers and returning flyers of various levels of experience.
What should I wear / bring?
- Wear comfortable workout clothes that allow freedom of movement but are not baggy.
- Wear legwear that extends below the knee. It will provide more comfort when doing tricks, such as the knee-hang taught to all first-time flyers.
- Wear socks. You'll be more comfortable on the ground, climbing the ladder, and walking on the net. Ballet slippers and similar soft-soled, snug, flexible footware may also be worn.
- Dress for the weather. Southern California usually provides the perfect climate for outdoor trapeze training. Light layers work well for adapting to temperature changes throughout the day, and allow greater comfort as your body warms up from the physical activity. On chillier days, choose warmer workout gear that allows freedom of movement.
- Our facility has ample shaded areas, but it's a good idea to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Just remember to take off the hat and/or glasses before you climb the ladder to swing.
What kind of certification do your trainers have?
Currently, no industry standard exists to certify the knowlege and qualifications of trapeze and aerial arts coaches and trainers. That's why we've developed our own comprehensive training & certification program. Becoming a FlightCrew Coach requires more than just experience in aerial arts and althetics. It requires a talent and passion for teaching, and the ability to working with flyers of all ages, fitness levels, and experience..
Additionally, our training staff and PRE-Flight program designers are certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and have comprehensive knowledge of human movement science, functional anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, and is the preferred choice of the major health and fitness clubs in the country.
